By the time his eponymous LP flopped out on Reflection in 1970, Robert William “Bobby” Scott had 24 full-length records to his name, a Grammy Award, a #13 track on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and had toured and recorded with Louis Prima, Chet Baker, and Quincy Jones. Did we mention his massive hit for The Beatles? We’ll get there.

A student of the La Follette School of Music, Scott began working as a professional musician at the tender age of eleven. A pianist and vibraphonist by trade, Scott was an instrument renaissance man, and could handle cello, clarinet, accordion, and double bass with equal proficiency. Don’t get us started on that voice—so powerful and tender it echoes in your bones. A masterclass in songwriting, featuring Scott’s classic ballads “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” and “Willoughby Grove,” the album captures the passage of time’s bittersweet nostalgia with an elegance and weight few have been able to achieve.

Stunningly gorgeous soft rock, bringing to mind some kind of homogenization of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Bee Gees. The music is a textured backdrop for the lush, poignant vocals. And while I called it soft rock, the slide guitars give it a hint of country, and tho the music is mellow the vibe is so melancholic as to almost be considered edgy. Lute FP
